The day was July 11th, 2021. The scene was Mona Lake rope swing, a glorified murky puddle beneath a cloudy sky. Brooklyn, wearing her thrifted boy's jean shorts and a t-shirt, glanced up from her handful of grapes to see a tall figure in a brown t-shirt standing a few yards away. Rapidly popping the last few grapes into her mouth, she formulated an approach plan. She walked up to a she knew guy standing nearby, said hi, then quickly pivoted toward Brown t-Shirt and said, "Hi I'm Brooklyn! I don't think I know you yet, what's your name?" He spoke, but she was distracted by his ruffly hair. Did he say his name was David? She was pretty sure it was David or Jacob. To be safe, she avoided saying his name. After talking for thirty minutes, she accidentally gave him a friend's number instead of her own because he said he played volleyball and she, overexcited about finding a possible in, said "my friend Rob plays volleyball! Here's his number and you guys can play sometime!" Before she could remedy the situation and give him her number, her friends came up to talk with her and he went over to his friends and Brooklyn thought she'd lost her chance. Right before leaving Mona later on, she lingered by the juice boxes, stalling for another opportunity to talk to him—but he was sitting with his friends and she didn't want to interrupt. But then coincidentally—or maybe not—he got up and walked up to the juice table too. Before she could get too nervous, Brooklyn blurted out "Hey we are leaving but if you ever want to play pickleball—which I play—here's my number!" For those of you sitting in suspense, his name was Jacob :)
