Things To Do

We made a list of some of our favorite places to visit on island: restaurants, breweries, lookout spots, bakeries, hikes, and more. Enjoy!

Kona Brewing Hawaii

74-5612 Pawai Place, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740
, (808) 334-2739

Kona has their own brewing company on island. Hop on over for great beer and pizza! They also offer Happy Hour from 3pm - 5pm Monday through Friday. Our favorite beers are the Kona Light, Big Wave and Longboard.

Ola Brew Co

74-5598 Luhia Street, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740
, (808) 339-3599

This is a smaller Big Island brewing company. They are notorious for different types of beer, seltzers, and ciders. Unfortunately, there is no happy hour here. But it's a perfect place to enjoy pupus (appetizers) and flights! Some of Seth and I's favorite pupus is their "Pestoroni" flatbread and pork tacos. We would not recommend going here to order a meal; they are mostly shared appetizers and regular "bar" food.

Papa Kona Restaurant & Bar

75-5770 Alii Drive, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740
, (808) 300-0044

This is our favorite breakfast place on the island. You can get seats perfectly on the ocean. We recommend making reservations in advance to make sure you get that ocean seating. Our favorite entrees include the french toast (SO GOOD!!) and any of the eggs benedict!

Foster's Kitchen

75-5805 Alii Drive, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740
, (808) 326-1600

This is a higher-end restaurant, but the prices are not too bad. We love their drinks and entrees. You really can't go wrong with anything you order. We do recommend saving room for dessert and ordering their Lilikoi cheesecake!

The Fish And The Hog

64-957 Hawaii Belt Road, Waimea, HI 96743
, (808) 885-6268

If you love BBQ - this is THE place on island!! Our favorite entrees include anything with brisket and their Brisket French Dip (SO DELICIOUS!) Expect good portions, especially with the French Dip, so it might be good to share unless you are super hungry!

Waimea Homestead Farmer's Market

67-1229 Mamalahoa Highway, Waimea, HI 96743
, (808) 333-2165

We love going on Saturday mornings to Waimea's Farmers Market. They are open from around 8am - noon. But the perfect time is sooner than later to make sure all of the goodies are their to indulge on!

Waimea Coffee Company

65-1279 Kawaihae Road, Waimea, HI 96743
, (808) 885-8915

If you love coffee, this is the place to go! Also, order their acai bowl... in my opinion, it's the best one on island and is perfect to share.

Kona Coffee & Tea

74-5588 Palani Road, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740
, (888) 873-2035

This is another local coffee shop. Expect it to be more expensive, because it is farm-to-table ingredients and coffee used.

Lava Lava Beach Club Restaurant

Waikoloa Village, HI 96738
, (808) 769-5282

This is THE place to go to be on the beach. They have fun games, live music, great drinks and food! Definitely on the more expensive side, but highly worth it!

Village Burger Kamuela

67 - 1185 Hawaii Belt Road, Waimea, HI 96743
, (808) 885-7319

THESE ARE THE BEST BURGERS ON ISLAND! The beef used is the beef you see on the pastures in Waimea. Another farm-to-table restaurant.

Tex Drive-In

45-690 Pakalana Street, Honokaa, HI 96727
, (808) 775-0598

Delicious homemade malasadas (deep fried donuts) are found here!

Punalu'u Bake Shop

Hawaii 11, Naalehu, HI 96772
, (866) 366-3501

Another place to get the best homemade malasadas and a cup of coffee!

Poi Dog Deli

75-1022 Henry Street, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740
, (808) 329-2917

This place is a fun sandwich shop with different drink options. Our favorite is to split the reuben and the strawberry salad!

Pueo's Osteria, LLC

68-1845 Waikoloa Road, Waikoloa Village, HI 96738
, (808) 339-7566

This is a homemade Italian restaurant. It is pricy, but extremely delicious if you are looking to indulge!

, (808) 935-4939

This restaurant has a beautiful view overlooking the bay. We recommend making reservations!

This is another delicious Italian place in the small town of Hilo.

Ken's House of Pancakes

1730 Kamehameha Avenue, Hilo, HI 96720
, (808) 935-8711

Perfect place for an all-day breakfast option with other delicious choices as well. It's definitely a small diner feel and owned by THE Rock's family.

Jackie Rey's Ohana Grill Kona

75-5995 Kuakini Highway, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740
, (808) 327-0209

This is a pricey restaurant, but a great place if you are interested in a local place. There is also a location in Hilo. Reservations are needed.

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, HI 96718
, (808) 985-6000

Volcano National Park is a great place to visit. You will have to pay during the day to get in. But currently, the volcano is erupting, so if you go at night: 1. you don't have to pay and 2: you can possibly see the red lava glow.

Punaluʻu Beach

HI

Black Sand Beach with lots of turtles!

Hapuna Beach

HI 96743

Beautiful white sand beach! Perfect place to swim.

Kaunaʻoa (Mauna Kea) Beach

62-100 Mauna Kea Beach Drive, Waimea, HI 96743

This beach is next to Hapuna - so beautiful but limited parking. When you drive in ask for a parking pass and if there are spaces available, they will give you one. All you have to do from there is follow the road straight to the parking lot. Perfect place to swim!

Kua Bay

Kalaoa, HI 96740

This beach is beautiful for some fun waves and lava rock with white sand beach. Be careful of waves while swimming.

‘Alula Beach

Kailua-Kona, HI 96740

Beautiful place to sit and chill, but not the greatest place to swim.

Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area

75-5560 Kuakini Highway, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740
, (808) 323-4322

Not a place to swim. But a perfect place for sunset and a cocktail!

, (808) 961-8688

Black sand, great place to snorkel and to see turtles.

, (808) 961-8311

Great place to swim and snorkel!

Honoli'i Beach Park

180 Kahoa Street, Hilo, HI 96720
, (808) 464-0840

If you want to watch people surf... this is the place!

Mauna Kea

HI 96720

This is a dormant volcano. You can drive up to the visitor center without a four-wheel drive car. However, if you want to drive up to the top, you can with four-wheel drive. Either way, the visitor center is a nice place to watch the sunrise, sunset, or star gaze!

Pololu Valley Lookout

52-5100 Akoni Pule Highway, Kapaau, HI 96755

This place is a beautiful lookout area or a 20-minute hike down to the bottom.

Waipio Valley Lookout
