How We Met

We met long ago, (somehow over 20 years now!) the summer before 6th grade on the beautiful slopes of Haleakala.

Seabury Hall will forever remain a special spot for all that it provided us; for 7 influential years, it fostered a relationship that grew steadily through our most formative years. As some of you might know, we actually attended our Sophomore year prom together! While we both went to different Universities (shout out Banana Slug and Buffalo alumni!), we stayed close friends and relished every break we got to see each other back home on Maui. After graduating, the timing finally seemed right and our friendship quickly grew into a more official relationship. Many twists and turns later—including long distance Skype calls for a year between Melbourne and Maui; moving to LA with a few suitcases and little in terms of job prospects; publishing a book and opening a boutique floral shop; adopting our ever loving dog Pika; and finally, setting some roots in North Park, San Diego for the last 3+ years—we are ready to celebrate our love and exchange vows back on our island home, on those very same slopes we met over 2 decades ago!

The Proposal

I (Alex) had been planning on proposing for the past couple years but wanted a few things to be in place before it’d be perfect.

First was the perfect ring - I knew I wanted a stone that was already in the family and make it a generational heirloom. After browsing options, my Mom and I found the perfect one, a gift from my Dad nearly 40 years ago on Maui. Next was the location, it had to be back home in Hawaii, a place where we planned to move and start a family in the next few years. Luckily we had a trip set, and this past winter we traveled to Maui for thanksgiving. In an effort to keep it spontaneous and as much a surprise as possible, I kept the ring at the ready for nearly every moment of the trip. Ultimately I knew where it should happen: Baldwin Beach, a place where we first exchanged kisses some 15 years ago. This plan was quickly tested. Our morning started at the Waldorf Carnival where my face was fully painted with our nephew Gavin. We enjoyed the fair and soon set off to the North Shore. When we got to the beach, Brooke jokingly said, “well at least I know you’re not proposing to me now, with your face looking like that!” Honestly, with thought of the proposal top of my mind, I had pretty much forgotten that I had a superhero motif plastered on my face. I took her words to heart and decided to wait until at least I was cleaned up and more recognizable. We returned to Haiku where Brooke (unbeknownst to me) requested to babysit Gavin. Again another curveball, as my new plan to propose outside at sunset was challenged when Gavin decided he didn’t want to go outside and Brooke agreed that she didn't either. Just as our dear friend and my appointed photographer, Jaclyn (who had been on duty since the beach) started getting worried I was completely dropping the ball, I called Brooke out to the porch and dropped to one knee. I told her that I had been waiting and thinking of this moment for what felt like forever. Before I knew it, we were both in tears, jumping up and down as our honorary photographer came out, Gavin on hip, capturing the moment to be enjoyed forever.
