Travel Note
John Day is surrounded by the beautiful Strawberry Mountains, however this does mean that cell service is not always the best. Coming from the Tri Cities area, Portland or Boise direction you will lose service for awhile. I recommend printing any directions you need. Cell service is lost between John Day and Prairie City sometimes also.

Travel Note
Both John Day and Prairie City have hotels for inexpensive rates. However this is a time when the rooms start to fill up with fire fighters, so booking early is always a good option if you plan to stay the night. Also if you do chose to stay this area is perfect for outdoor activity. From hiking to fishing the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness Area is 68,700 acres. The Fossil Beds are also an interesting sight to see and about 45 minutes outside John Day towards Portland.
