Our Story We met in the least glamorous, most “us,” way possible: shift change at the fire station. Jared was finishing up a shift as Brittany was coming on. She always jokes that her first real memory of him is this man walking out of the dorms in cowboy boots, shorts, and a flannel, thinking, “Who IS this man?” We worked a few shifts together and realized pretty quickly that our connection and chemistry was unlike anything either of us had ever experienced. The banter was easy, the comfort was instant, and from the beginning it felt like we were picking up in the middle of a story instead of starting one. Our first real hangout happened when Jared told Brittany it was basically a sin that she had never seen “Remember the Titans.” He convinced her to come over and watch it, and since she had just bought her first house, he also surprised her with a housewarming gift. We ended up staying up until about 3 a.m., talking about life, playing board games (where Brittany absolutely destroyed Jared in Battleship), and realizing this was different. It wasn’t just a fun night—it felt like we’d stumbled into something that would significantly change the trajectory of our lives. What stood out to Jared about Brittany was how she somehow balances everything so effortlessly—her kindness, insane work ethic, sharp mind, and this creative, goofy, steady presence that fills every room she walks into. She’s gentle and tough, soft-hearted and stubborn in all the right ways. She makes everyone around her better, and she makes hard things feel possible. Not long after, Jared “volunteered” to be the unofficial general contractor on Brittany’s new house. At the time, it sounded like a great idea: just some projects and memories. In reality, it turned into long nights, sore backs, and more trips to the hardware store than either of us care to count. But somewhere between the sawdust and takeout dinners on the floor, it became clear this wasn’t just a house; it was the beginning of a home and a life we were building together. There are a few moments that stand out as the “this is it” moments. Sitting on the back deck of our home, eating pizza—Jared with a beer, Brittany with a glass of wine—music playing while we danced through the halls. And another night, driving out to the beach to watch the sunset, Brittany feeding Jared fancy cheeses and fruit he’d never eaten in his life because it was all “good for you” food. It was simple and quiet and perfect, rare moments of pure contentment and love. We knew within a couple of months that this was it. From the first night we hung out, we’ve basically been inseparable, only apart when work or life physically pulls us in different directions. When it came time to propose, Jared pulled in the people who knew our story best. His crew at the department Laine Desiletes, Ken Laha, Nate Lea, and Cody Cates, and Brittany’s best friend Andrea, helped plan everything—the ring, the timing, the setup, the distractions—so that all Brittany had to do was walk into a moment that had been built just for her. They all knew what Jared knew from the start: Brittany wasn’t just a great love story; she was the one. And now here we are, ready to celebrate the beginning of the rest of our lives with all of you.
