What she thought was just normal summer family cookout turned out to be the biggest surprise of her life. I proposed to her in the backyard of my childhood home surrounded by the people who shaped us, loved us and supported us from day one. Friends and family flew in from Georgia, California, D.C. and Texas all just to be part of this wonderful moment. The yard was filled with laughter, love and amazing food. As people began to arrive, it was time for the set up, the plan was to get Brittany away from the house long enough for the real surprise: a balloon display that read, “Will you marry me?” and sneaking her family and friends to the back. Once we were finishing up, I stood in front of the display, waiting for her to return. As she made her way back into the yard, the crowd encouraged her to dance and if you know Brittany, you know it doesn’t take much convincing. With her usual energy, she lit up the moment while guests gathered around her, cheering. Then, in an instant, her expression changed as she began to recognize the faces in the crowd, her family and closest friends, many of whom had traveled from across the country. It took a second for it all to register, but once it did, the shock, joy and happy confusion were written all over her face. Only then did she realize what was happening, as I took her hand and spoke the simple words, “Will you marry me?” Her smile said it all, followed by a resounding “Yes.” Seeing her family in Ohio was already a surprise but realizing why they were there brought tears, joy and a memory we’ll cherish forever. That day wasn’t just a proposal, it was a celebration of love, roots and the beginning of our forever. #ForeverWilson
