Despite the fact that Brittani's sister (Kaitlyn) had been dating one of David's best friends from college (RL) since middle school, David and Brittani never actually met until a month before Kaitlyn and RL's wedding at their bridal BBQ. They hit it off when Brittani jokingly introduced David as her boyfriend to her uncle. The next day, David and a few of RL's groomsmen walked to the beach with Kaitlyn and her sisters. As they talked and got to know each other, they didn't realize they had fallen behind the group until Kaitlyn turned around to say "are you guys enjoying your date?" David left Stony Brook a couple hours later to head back home to D.C. but knew he needed to see Brittani again. The next day, he told Brittani he had fun on their "date" and wanted to take her out for a second one - this time in D.C. Despite only knowing David for about a day, Brittani, who was living in New York at the time, decided to accept and went to D.C. two weeks later for the date. They never looked back from that moment on the beach and spent the next year dating long distance with lots of fun trips to Brooklyn, D.C., and many other places along the way.
After a year of long distance, Brittani found a job in the D.C. area and made the move down so they could finally move in together. David had a feeling that first day on the beach that he was going to marry Brittani but thought it might be good to be living in the same city before popping the question. While visiting Long Island for Thanksgiving, David took Brittani back to the beach where they had their first "date." Although it was one of the (literally) coldest days in history, he made Brittani get out of the car so they could take a picture together on the beach. David started talking and Brittani started to wonder why she was standing outside in the cold. To avoid frostbite, David got down on one knee and thankfully, Brittani quickly said "yes." (Thanks to Ryann for braving the frigid weather to hide in the bushes and take this picture!)
