Grand Lake is a beautiful alpine lake with an awesome town that's only 40 minutes drive from DTR. https://www.visitgrandcounty.com/explore/towns/grand-lake
The Rocky Mountain National Park entrance at Grand Lake is 1 hour and 15 mins from DTR. This is the gateway to the National Park. Trail Ridge Road is a famous drive that when fully open can lead you all the way to Estes Park, Colorado on the east side of the Continental Divide.
Grand Elk golf course typically opens around mid-April. Conditions will certainly be weather dependent, but if it's a dry April and skiing doesn't look so great, golf will be an awesome option at low shoulder season rates!
This is a little scenic stop on the way to/from Devil's Thumb Ranch. It's a .1 mile hike off US-40 to see a waterfall! Be sure to read all of the details in the link as the parking area is right off the highway. Be aware of all safety recommendations.
Idaho Springs is a great place to stop for lunch when travelling to and from the mountains. The historic main street is vibrant with shops, restaurants and bars.
