How We Met

Drunk in Love

On March 17, 2018, it was a busy St. Patrick's Day Saturday at PourHouse in Bayside. By early afternoon, the bar was so packed with patrons that we had run out of clean glasses and began washing them by hand so we could continue to serve drinks. As I stood on the sticky rubber floor, washing empty glasses, and having orders shouted at me, I looked up to the front door just in time to see the most handsome man I had ever seen walking in. It's hard not to lean on cliches in this situation, but my heart quite literally skipped a beat as I took in the stranger's thick, black hair, dimpled smile, and luminous, bright eyes that I could see even across a crowded room. In my stupor, I dropped the glass I was washing and it shattered loudly on the floor, only to be met with drunken cries of "mazel tov!" from the partygoers around me. The crashing of glass had drawn the handsome stranger's attention and I watched in equal parts excitement, curiosity, and embarrassment as he approached me. To my delight, he unzipped his jacket and I saw the PourHouse logo adorning his shirt and realized, "This guy works here!" He came around the bar, introduced himself as Lloyd, and began to help me clean up the mess I had made while I was distracted by him. Instead of helping him clean up though, I grabbed my phone and furiously began texting my now maid-of-honor, Kaitlyn, "I literally just met my future husband." I had no idea how right I was. The day was so busy that we hardly had a chance to talk, but I made sure that at the end of my shift, I found Lloyd to say good-bye so he would remember me. In my frenzy to find Lloyd and say good-bye, I left behind my coffee mug. The following week, I returned for work and stopped by PourHouse to retrieve it, and who should be behind the bar, working, but my new crush! He greeted me by name and my stomach fluttered at the fact that he remembered me. The shift we worked together that night would be one of the most memorable in my career solely for the fact that I fell in love with Lloyd as a result of it. The conversation between us flowed like we had known each other for decades and the similarities between us were endless. I was in awe that I had met someone so attractive, so smart, so funny at the little hole-in-the-wall bar that I had taken a job at for extra cash. It would be dishonest to say, "who would have guessed that we would end up together?", because I did -- I knew from that first day, somehow, that I had met the person I would spend the rest of my life with. Every day since March 17, 2018 has been a reminder of how lucky I got finding the person I was meant to be with when and how I did. - Brittany
