How They Met

March 21, 2018

It was a random Wednesday on a beautiful spring San Diego evening. Britney was celebrating a friend's birthday in North Park. After dinner, she and her friends decided to keep the party going by going out to the bars, even though many of them had class the next morning. Britney insisted that they head to one of her favorite arcade bars, Coin Op. Meanwhile, Mark was just finishing a climbing session at Mesa Rim. He had just halfheartedly agreed to meet up with some friends from a drink at Coin Op. Although he was lazy to go, he decided he would be a good friend and make a quick appearance. The perfect set up for a serendipitous meeting! Britney was chatting with her friends when she noticed Mark walk into the bar. She immediately was drawn to him and wanted to introduce herself. Britney’s friend Michelle noticed that she was distracted and asked her what was up. Britney pointed Mark out and said, “I just really want to go talk to that guy over there!” Michelle said, “Let’s do it! I’ll wingman for you!” Mark had just sat down with his pal Patrick. They had ordered a plate of nachos and were catching up at a large community table. Britney and Michelle came to sit at same table and tried to find a way to strike up a conversation. Pat (thankfully) noticed that Britney kept glancing over at Mark and met her eye. He pointed at the nachos, in a playful way. Britney awkwardly said, “Yeah those nachos look kinda sketch.” Mark finally looked up at Britney and said, “Do you want to try one?” Britney said yes. She took a bite and said, “Yeah those are terrible.” Britney introduced herself and mentioned that she was a nursing student. Mark said that he was a medical student and boom! Mark’s quick drink turned into a two-hour conversation with Britney. After getting her name wrong a few times, he finally got her number and they agreed to get dinner sometime soon. They said goodbye and, in that moment, they both knew that this was the start of something wonderful.

The Proposal

July 12, 2020

From Mickey pretzels, to riding "it’s a small world”, to getting people in line for Pirates of the Caribbean to wave back, to a Soarin’ iPhone accident, to eking out a half day at Anaheim in pouring rain, Mark knew the proposal would have to incorporate Disney. He brainstormed ideas involving the balloons from Up, the transmogrifying potions of The Emperor's New Groove, or the hat, cane, and dance from WALL-E, but Mark always came back to the floating lanterns from Tangled. Going to Disney World with Britney and taking evening photos with the Tangled lantern prop sealed the deal for him. The plan was to propose at night amongst paper lanterns illuminated by candles on a deserted part of the La Jolla Shores beach. The night of, roommates Mary and Allie drove out to help set up at 10 pm. Mark staved off suspicion by telling Britney he had an errand to run that night, like all the other "errands" he had run for the prior month. Mark then forgot the candles, made a roundtrip back home to an increasingly wary Britney ("I forgot my COVID mask!"), and finally came back to ask Britney for a nice night stroll on the beach, "remember how nice it was to go to the beach at 2 am to see the bioluminescence?" Asking Britney to change her comfy PJs for the nice dress from dinner definitely didn't give it away, but of course, she said yes anyway. Britney and Mark can't wait to start their lives together and have their own "happily ever after."
