FAQs

We're so thrilled to celebrate our marriage with our loved ones, and to introduce you all to Laketrails and Lake of the Woods. It is our favorite place in the world! It'll be a heckuva trip! We hope you're looking forward to experiencing island magic with us!
Question

How do I get to Laketrails?

Answer

Guests will get a taste of the full Laketrails experience by taking the rural roads across Minnesota and Manitoba to get to the Northwest Angle, then by crossing the water to Laketrails by boat. You'll cross the border into Canada at the Canadian port by car in Warroad, drive through Canada, cross the border back in to MN again and report your entry remotely, continue on to Young's Bay, and park your car. This is where we will have boat shuttles ready to transport guests and luggage to Laketrails!

Question

What sort of international travel documents will I need to cross the border?

Answer

To cross the Canadian border, U.S. citizens and permanent residents need to carry proof of citizenship and identity. This can include: A valid U.S. passport A valid U.S. passport card A NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST enrollment card An Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) issued by New York, Michigan, Minnesota, Vermont, or Washington A birth certificate and one photo identification card A certificate of citizenship or naturalization A certificate of Indian Status along with photo identification A US Permanent Resident Card Children under 16 only need proof of U.S. citizenship. REAL ID cards cannot be used for border crossings into Canada. Double check your travel documents' expiration dates to ensure that they'll be current for your trip to our wedding on August 23, 2025!

Question

How do I cross the US/Canada border to get to the Northwest Angle?

Answer

We recommend crossing the border in Warroad, MN. Use your Google Maps or Apple Maps app to navigate to Young's Bay, Angle Township, MN. It takes about an hour and 30 minutes to drive to Young's Bay. You'll first come to the Canadian / US Port where you'll stop and speak with a border agent. When they ask you about your trip, you can let them know that you'll just be passing through Canada to go to Oak Island in the Northwest Angle. Your navigational directions will next take you through Sprague, Manitoba, and though rural paved and gravel roads. Eventually, you'll cross the Minnesota / Canada border again and will have to report your entry into the United States again. You can do that on the "CBP ROAM" mobile app or at the iPad station at "Jim's Corner". From there, you can drive & park at Young's Bay!

Question

What smartphone app should I download to report my international border crossing?

Answer

We recommend using the "CBP ROAM" app to report your remote entry into Minnesota while getting to the Northwest Angle. They'll ask for your mode of travel (automobile make & model, license plate); arrival location (respond: "Jim's Corner, NW Angle"); basic information about the travelers in your vehicle including passport/travel document information; and a few other yes / no questions. This form of reporting your international arrival will only work while crossing the border into MN. It will not work for reporting your entry into Canada or when you are reporting into a physical border crossing location.

Question

Can I bring my boat to Laketrails?

Answer

We have limited dock space to manage and ask you to please reach out to Troy directly to check in about whether we have space for guests' additional watercraft!

Question

What sort of transportation will be available to and from the Island/Laketrails?

Answer

Boat shuttles are provided for those who are staying at Laketrails Saturday night after the reception. If you are planning to stay at a nearby resort that night, we'll ask you to coordinate your own boat shuttle off the island.

Question

Is there a dress code? How should I dress?

Answer

We want to make sure our guests are feeling comfortable and celebratory, whatever that means for you! Make sure you're able to get in and out of a boat for your shuttle ride to Laketrails. Our special recommendation is that we love wearing sandals on the island. Ladies: high heels might not be a great option!

Question

What sort of amenities do you have at Laketrails?

Answer

Laketrails has outhouses in various locations around the island, including one with ramp access. There is also a shower house with 5 individual shower stalls, sinks for toothbrushing/washing up in the shower house. Guests are also welcome to use the sinks in the KP area in the main lodge for toothbrushing, etc, in the evening before bed.

Question

What kind of lodging do you have available for guests at Laketrails?

Answer

Lodging is camp style! We have a number of cabins with twin-size bunkbeds. You are also welcome to bring a tent and pitch it in a few designated areas on the island. Please indicate on your RSVP if you'd prefer to tent, sleep in a cabin, or plan to stay off-island Saturday night. All guests are responsible for bringing their own bedding for cabin & tent stays.

Question

Do any of your cabins have electricity?

Answer

We have a couple of cabins that have electricity and some without. If you need electricity for medical / sleep reasons, please check in with Troy & Bridget and we will assign you to a cabin to accommodate those needs!

Question

What meals are provided during the weekend?

Answer

We'll be providing meals for all of our guests: - On Saturday, August 23rd, for our reception dinner - On Sunday, August 24th, for our send-off brunch

Question

What lodging options do you recommend if I want to stay at a nearby resort?

Answer

If you are opting to book a stay at a nearby resort instead of staying at Laketrails Saturday night, please consider some of the lodging recommendations provided on the "Travel" tab of our website. We ask that all guests planning to stay at outside resorts coordinate their own boat shuttles to and from those locations. Thanks for understanding!
