October 31, 2016 – Barangaroo, Sydney, Melbourne Cup Day: Having recently arrived in the lucky country, Theo was disappointed to find that the seat next to him at the KPMG “boozy” lunch was empty, as the guest was a no-show. His mood was quickly lifted by the news that the meal had been pre-ordered and therefore he was getting two lunches, plus, how cool could “Bri” be anyway. Meanwhile, 7,497 miles away, Bri was waking up groggy in an airport hotel – having gone through hours of delays and ultimately a cancelled flight the night before. She felt disappointed knowing that she was missing the chance to meet her new KPMG colleagues in Australia. Fast forward 8 months to Bri and Theo on a group trip in Noosa. As the two beginners in the group, Theo and Bri were teamed up as scuba diving buddies, and despite Theo doing his best to get everyone killed by slicing his hand open in the shark infested waters of Queensland, it was clear to everyone else on the trip that the two were headed for “more than just friends”. Given the fact that she was due to return home to SF in 4 short months, the timing left Bri a bit uneasy. Despite the initial hesitation, Theo won Bri over on their first date at the Paddington Pub, impressing her with his dry, British humor (read: accent) and endless conversations fueled by cheap wine. Over the next 3 months things moved quickly and the couple was usually found hanging out at Manly Beach or exploring the Australian East Coast. As October 2017 drew near, it hadn’t escaped anyone’s attention that with both their secondments in Australia nearing their end date, they faced some tough decisions. After the door closed on an opportunity for Bri to stay in Sydney, she was devastated to know that her time in Australia was coming to an end in a matter of weeks. In tears on the Barangaroo steps, Bri broke the news to Theo… "…well, I’ll just move to San Francisco then."
