How did B + K meet? Well, they were both born in Arizona, after all! They met at none other than a pool party hosted by mutual friends. Adam, Blaine, Jonny, and Evan lived in the Scottsdale Moishe House and in the early summer of 2015, the boys threw a backyard pool party. Brian was buddies with the hosts from BBYO, the Jewish youth group he participated in throughout middle and high school. Kalie became friends with this same group of guys as an adult when she returned to Arizona, after living in Israel for several years. Kalie was splish-splashing in the pool when Brian arrived at the party. She had never seen this guy before (that was because Brian was just visiting; he lived in Colorado where he was going to vet school at CSU). Everyone made such a scene when Brian walked into the backyard. A bunch of bros picked him up and exuberantly tossed him in the pool! Kalie was thinking, “What’s the big deal? Who is this guy?” As he pulled himself out of the pool and toweled off, she saw an opportunity to introduce herself. She noticed that he had brought his own mini-cooler—he packed his own beer for the party (she also noticed that he had a *very* hot bod). She asked him, “What do you have there in your cooler,” “Oh, it’s a Milk Stout from Left Hand Brewing in Colorado, do you want one?” Kalie cooly responded, “No, but I’ll share one with you.” The rest is history… (Actually, that's not entirely true. They didn’t start dating for another six months. But they got to know each other over the course of that 2015 summer. And, it should be noted, Brian left that pool party early to go watch Game of Thrones).
Shortly after Brian and Kalie moved to Ames, Iowa, Brian told Kalie that they were going to meet some of his new colleagues from Iowa State’s surgery team at Alluvial Brewing Company for a beer. This, of course, was a story he spun so Kalie wouldn’t suspect the proposal. Kalie noticed, however, that Brian was a little overdressed for a beer at an Iowa brewery. He was wearing a polo—not his usual style. In the car, Kalie was singing along to some filthy rap song (I think it was ‘Da Dip’ by Freak Nasty). Brian was getting nervous and staying suspiciously quiet throughout Kalie’s 90s hip-hop sing-a-long. When they got to the brewery, Kalie and Brian got some beers, and sat down on the patio (Brian had hired a photographer in advance and he was planted inconspicuously on the brewery’s patio, too). Brian asked Kalie if she wanted to take a stroll around the property. “Not really,” Kalie said, “I kinda just want to drink my beer…” Then, the goats arrived. Yes - goats. A farming family with pet goats brought them to the brewery and they were roaming around. The goats were really stealing the show. After the excitement of the goats died down, Brian led Kalie over to a Persian rug that was laid out under a tent (check out the photo gallery for visuals). He launched into a monologue, retelling the history of their love and their shared journey to this moment. Kalie blacked out, and remembers nothing. Brian got down on one knee and presented a ring that he selected himself, without any counsel from Moms or friends. The photographer was getting all the shots, Brian popped the question, and Kalie said yes!
