We met at a cookout at Picnic Island Park in Tampa, FL. Our initial conversation was brief, but we met again unexpectedly at an impromptu after party that evening, where we talked for the rest of the night. We developed a great friendship...but it almost ended there. Bria says: We'd been hanging out as friends for a few months, and I was beginning to wonder where this was heading. I asked Kelvin and he said he liked things the way they were and didn't want to mess it up with labels. I, of course, took that to mean that I could still date other people. So when I got asked out on a date a couple days after that conversation, I did a quick check-in with Kelvin just to be sure we were on the same page. To my surprise, Kelvin declared that he'd been telling everyone I was his girlfriend all along! I'm glad I asked. I declined the date, and we've been together ever since. Kelvin says: I don't introduce just anyone to my mom, so I figured she knew that since she met my mom, we were together! I couldn't believe she was trying go out with someone else - I wasn't seeing anyone else, and I didn't think she wanted to either! I'm glad she clarified before she went on that date too - we would have been through dealing. This is the Cliffs Notes version of our courtship - chat with us at the wedding to hear all about why Bria approached Kelvin at the cookout (and who Kelvin was with), the infamous Pepper Steak, and when Bria first realized that she was Kelvin's date at the Black and White Ball. We are both so grateful to God that He allowed us to meet at the right time in our lives. We aren't perfect people, but we are perfect for each other and can't wait to spend the rest of our lives together!
Kelvin and Bria had talked extensively about marriage, but Bria was starting to wonder when the proposal would happen. At one point, she mentioned to her mom that she thought maybe it would happen on Thanksgiving but her mom gave several reasons why it wouldn't be that day, so Bria forgot about it (she buffed her nails just in case though). On Thanksgiving Day, a Zoom call was set up for a few friends and Kelvin's family (because COVID). Bria's Mom and Dad had come over to celebrate Thanksgiving in person. Once everyone was assembled on Zoom, Kelvin took charge and started asking each person what they were grateful for. To Bria's surprise, he concluded the round of gratitude by saying he was grateful for her and PROPOSING! The proposal was made even more special and unique because Bria could hear Kelvin proposing, but she could also hear what she now affectionately calls "the peanut gallery" on Zoom saying they couldn't hear Kelvin, and her mom telling Kelvin to get down on his knee. All in all, it was a super special moment surrounded virtually and in person by loved ones and they wouldn't have had it any other way (other than to have everyone there in person).
