From Tau to Vow

Under the humming fluorescent lights of the Biology 2 building, two UCSB graduate students first met over a stubborn tau prep. Thanks to a two‑decade‑old collaboration between their advisors, Becca got the official (and slightly terrifying) job of teaching Brettly, a physicist, the fundamentals of molecular biology. Brettly’s superpower? Asking a million “why?”s right when Becca was trying to finish a delicate experiment or stare down a microscope. At first it drove her nuts! But over time, she started to appreciate his relentless curiosity (and his knack for turning a boring protocol into a “what‑if” adventure), and Brettly learned the art of waiting for the perfect “break” to drop his next question. Fast forward to 2017. A classmate threw a Harry Potter costume party. While mingling among wizards and witches, Brettly discovered that Becca had just broken up with her boyfriend. The resulting grin that spread across his face at the news let Becca know immediately he was interested. They started dating soon after. Over the next eight years, Becca and Brettly turned their shared love of discovery into a love for the world itself. Today, they look back on a journey that started with a microscope, blossomed at a Harry Potter party, and has taken them on countless adventures around the world. Their story is proof that sometimes the most beautiful experiments begin with a little patience, a dash of humor, and a grin that says, “Let’s see where this takes us.”
