We first met through a mutual friend. Brett was considering Rice as one of his choices for business school and the friend thought it would be beneficial to talk to LaMecia. Business cards were exchanged. Weeks turned into months and no calls or emails were made. One fateful night in December, we found ourselves back in each other's company preparing to chaperone a lock-in for the program where we were both mentors. All night we had a chance to interact and share about our lives with each other (and the other chaperones). When we parted ways at 6 am, we were both tired but still determined to carry out the rest of the activities we had planned for ourselves: volunteering to build bikes for kids (Brett) and a line dance marathon (LaMecia). From that day forward, there hasn't been a day where one or both of us haven't picked up the phone to talk to the other.
