We had originally met at a shag (for non-Thunder Bay people a social). Brenden was dancing with my grandmother. I thought it was actually really sweet. He was laughing and having a good time. Friendly conversation was made, but his idea of flirting was telling me I was “old”. Needless to say, the relationship did not start here. Fast forward, two years later. April 12, 2017 Brenden’s best friend, Jamie and my sister, Kelsey had a baby girl. Both of us went to see sweet baby Stella at the same time. This time the banter was a lot friendlier and flirting was mutual. It started off with Facebook messages, then texts, slowly but surely things were starting to happen. Jamie and Kelsey were going to be getting married that coming October and both of us were in the wedding party. We started off by planning a surprise couple’s shower. May 26, 2017, this time we hit it off immediately. With all the planning we had a few beers and chatted about virtually everything. As much as he will tell everyone I got him drunk, he showed up with a fair amount of beers on hand so really it was mutual. After that we were pretty much inseparable.
Brenden had just got home from working at the mine. My birthday had just passed and I was almost three months pregnant. He took me for dinner at the Keg. We had a wonderful server, we bantered and laughed a lot. We joked about how many birthdays there were (there were at least 5 others) as free dessert after free dessert came out. My dad had text me to see if Bubba was back in town and it had seemed odd. Plus Bubba was acting a little different. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I had a feeling something was up. The section we were sitting in cleared out it was just us. Opportunity had presented itself. We shared dessert. When we were finished we got the check and headed home. On the drive home Brenden passed out (He did just get off midnights). In all honestly it was still a lovely birthday dinner. The next morning, five minutes before I was about to leave for work... I was grabbing my bag and water bottle from the table. I turned around to Brenden down on one knee, ring between his fingers, “Babe, will you marry me?”. My response, “are you being forreal right now? I’m leaving for work right now! Obviously yes!”. We exchanged I love yous and kissed goodbye. Off to work I went nerves rattled and engaged to my favourite person.
