Traverse City is a hub for some of the best biking in Northern Michigan, and we think it's a great way to explore the city and the Leelanau peninsula. Our suggestion: rent some bikes from Brick Wheels (link below) and take the paved, non-motorized Leelanau Trail to Suttons Bay and back.
The Leelanau Peninsula is home to some of the most picturesque wineries anywhere on the planet. There are many to visit, and they're located here in part because the 45th parallel (halfway between the earth's equator and north pole) runs through the peninsula, and many varieties of grapes grow exceptionally well here. We are very fond of Green Bird Cellars in Northport, and they also happen to be the only certified organic winery around.
If you're staying in an AirBnb or a similar type of rental, and would like to cook your own food while visiting, we highly recommend shopping at Oryana Co-Op. They do a great job of sourcing from many local farmers, and you'll get a true sampling of the local cuisine by shopping there. We've found the staff to be very helpful with recommendations for other good restaurants, too.
When we visit new places, one of the items that is always on the agenda is seeking out a good cup of coffee and a good pastry from a local purveyor. Luckily, Traverse City and the surrounding areas are 10/10 in this department. We happen to enjoy BLK MRKT Coffee, located in the Warehouse Market in downtown Traverse. Be sure to check out the other shops in Warehouse Market with air plants and a curated selection of housewares.
Historic Fishtown, located in nearby Leland, offers a window into the historic past of the vibrant fishing community on the shores of Lake Michigan. Many companies still offer fishing charters for a half or whole day, and you can still purchase fresh caught fish from the vendors along the dock. Leland is a beautiful, tight-knit community, and is easy to see via a leisurely walk.
One of our favorite beaches on the Leelanau Peninsula is Peterson Park in Northport. It offers stunning views of the lake and of both Manitou Islands in the distance. They have a playground, volleyball net, picnic tables, and most importantly--easy access to the water. We highly recommend swimming.
