Question

Cellphones: Will my calls and texts work?

Answer

International Plans: Be sure to call your cellphone carrier to discuss international plans or rates! I typically purchase a daily pass for ~$10/day or monthly for ~$50/month. Wifi (no cost): You may always turn off your data and connect to public wifi to avoid any added cellular costs, which public networks are commonly available in Dublin City. International Rates: Calls: Typically calls are anywhere from $.01-$3/minute per call for international calls depending on your carrier. Texts: Text rates vary and are typically sold in bundles of 50 for $.01-$1 per text. Data: Also, beware of using data internationally/roaming as this can be charged per MB and can be used quickly at a high cost.

Question

Where do you recommend visiting while we're in Ireland?

Answer

Starting from Dublin, SE, South, SW, to West! 1. Near Dublin: If the weather's nice, Malahide, Dun Laoghaire, Dalkey, & Howth are coastal/beach towns nearby 2. South East: Take a bus tour of Wicklow Mountains, nearby if you have the chance 3. South to Cork: (train/bus/car ~4 hrs from Dublin) - Go to the English Market - nearby Cobh (Titanic last departed!) - Blarney Castle (& kiss the Blarney Stone to get the "gift of the gab") - Jamison distillery 4. South to Kinsale - Beautiful seaport! World-class restaurants. 5. Southwest: - World-famous Cliffs of Moher! - Kerry (aka the ring of Kerry & Dingle beautiful) - Ross Castle is a sight to see 6. West: - Galway - a very fun city! Be sure to take a ferry to Aran Islands with a horse cart ride - Limerick to see castles and old town Ireland. Be sure to check out a hurling or rugby match at a pub! - County Clare is filled with gorgeous castles (Bunratty Castle is most popular but there are plenty to see!) - Dunguaire castle!

Question

CC Payment, Cash, & Tips: Do I need cash/euros or will my credit card work?

Answer

Credit cards: Today, most credit cards accept international payments without disruption but it would be best to call to make sure! Cash/Euros: We always have €100-500 cash but we've honestly been okay in all scenarios with our credit card, excluding cash tips (see below). Tipping: If you really enjoyed your service, it's nice to add 10% however this is unnecessary as most employees are paid salaries. That said it's nice to have euros available for tipping your cab driver, hotel staff, or waitresses but again, it's unnecessary.

Question

What is VAT?

Answer

VAT stands for Value Added Tax and is commonly added to goods & services. The VAT tax can be refunded or for certain items. You may keep your receipts to claim certain items, particularly goods, which can be refunded at the airport or after your trip!
