Answer

Located on the north shore of Boston, Marblehead is steeped in colonial period history. Originally founded in 1629, Marblehead was one of the largest and most prosperous settlements in the American colonies until the War of Independence. It was sustained by a successful fishing and seafaring industry, and an independent spirit that produced some of the colony’s leading war heroes. Among them, General John Glover whose troops fought at Bunker Hill and ferried Washington’s troops across the Delaware River on Christmas night 1776 in their surprise attack on the Hessian garrison in Trenton, New Jersey. Fort Sewall, at the mouth of Marblehead Harbor, is credited with saving the USS Constitution (“Old Ironsides”) from two pursuing British frigates in the War of 1812. Marblehead’s “Old Town” historic district has the largest collection of pre-revolution homes in the United States and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Next door to Marblehead is Salem, famous for the witch hysteria of 1692. Fun fact: On December 3, 1692, Hannah’s 11th Great Grandmother - Ann Alcock Foster – died of natural causes in the Salem jail at 75 years old having been convicted of witchcraft and sentenced to death.
