Miraflores is one of the most traveled and tourist friendly parts of Lima. However, it is still wise to exercise basic cautions and street-smarts when traveling abroad. 1. Do not drink tap water Tap water in Lima is not suitable for drinking. Make sure to consume only bottled water to avoid health risks. 2. Carry your valuables discreetly Consider leaving jewelry and expensive accessories at the hotel if you do not require them. It's generally safer not to display valuables openly in public places. 3. Using your cell phone in public When using your phone and taking photos in tourist areas, stay aware of your surroundings. To be on the safe side, it's best to keep your phone out of sight when not in use. Pickpocketing can happen in busy areas. 4. Car safety When you are in a car or taxi, make sure you do not place your valuables, such as your mobile phone or purse in plain sight if unnecessary.
Transportation in the city is BEST by taxi. It's recommended to have your hotel call a taxi for you to ensure reliable rides. If you need to arrange your own ride, reliable services include "Taxi Satelital" and "Taxi Directo". If you decide to use Uber, use normal recommended precautions such as verifying the license plate of your ride before entering the car. *Satellite Taxi: +51-1-355-5555 *Direct Taxi: +51-1-711-1111
In Peru, the local currency is the Sol. Having some Soles is probably a good idea. We recommend exchanging money at the Lima airport before venturing out. Other recommendations: Visa is mostly accepted, followed by Mastercard. American Express and Discover cards may be less reliable. Additionally, we recommend carrying some cash, as taxis and certain shops may not accept credit cards. ATMs are widely available in most areas to withdraw funds in local Soles.
