Brandon and Kennedi met on Tinder (an online dating app) in September 2020. For those who don't know, on Tinder you look through a bunch of people's pictures and swipe right on people you like. To match, both people must swipe right on each other. Brandon sent the first message. They chatted and Brandon disclosed his profession as a sports reporter to which Kennedi responded "Like Flex Washington?". If you know Kennedi, One on One is one of her favorite shows and the fact that Brandon knew who she was talking about, he had already gained her number. Fast forward to early-December 2020, as Brandon tells it, he'd thought Kennedi ghosted him, but Kennedi will say she was simply taking a break from social media to focus on Physician Assistant school. She happened to check Tinder before proceeding to delete the app and saw a couple unread messages from Brandon. She apologized explaining how she'd been really busy with school to which he admitted he still wanted to take her on a date. Kennedi was hesitant as she had finals coming up. She called her sister Karrington who convinced her to go on the date after finals were over. Brandon and Kennedi finally had a date set.
After many phone calls, texts and Facetimes. Brandon and Kennedi went on their first date in mid-December of 2020, during the infamous Covid Era. We decided to dine at Bobcat Bonnies in Ferndale, Michigan as it was one of the few restaurants open and offering covered outdoor seating. Kennedi arrived first as she only lived 10 minutes away. Brandon had a lengthier 1-hour drive. As Kennedi tells it, although she arrived first, her Ferndale Parking Mobile app wouldn't work so she was struggling to pay for parking, which resulted in her being about 40 minutes late to the date. Brandon kept calling her and recommended she park by him because he didn't need the app to park, but at that point, Kennedi had found quarters to pay the meter. She eventually met Brandon and asked if he'd gotten a table. He said "no", so they walked to the host stand together only to be told there was a 45-minute wait. Kennedi and Brandon tried to walk around outside but ended up just waiting in his car due to the freezing weather. While waiting, they jammed to music and sang Outta My System word for word, adlibs and all, among many other songs. Safe to say, even with the rough start, the date was improving. We finally got the text saying our table was ready. Brandon sat on the side away from the heater, yet he wasn't as bundled up as Kennedi was, so she offered to switch seats with him (she could tell he was cold but was trying to tough it out). Long story short, the date went really well. Brandon was the perfect gentlemen. He opened Kennedi's car door, walked her to her car, texted to make sure she made it home safe. We planned another date for the following week. Brandon would call his best friend Davon after the date and said, "That lady is going to be my girlfriend."
Brandon officially asked Kennedi to be his girlfriend on January 2, 2021. They spent the next 3.5 years traveling and doing activities together (hiking various trails, kayaking, swimming, water surfing, wakeboarding, go-cart racing, going to amusement, waterparks and basketball games Brandon never lost), meeting each other's family and friends, Kennedi graduated (a few times), Brandon was promoted twice. In August 2024 Brandon decided to advance his career in Orlando, Florida, a top 15 market in the US. It was now time for the couple to tackle long distance. It was tough, but they did their best to see each other in person at least every other month and they clearly came out the other side!
From Kennedi's perspective, she would go to work on Saturday, May 31, 2025 then come home to take family pictures. From Brandon's perspective, he would be flying into Michigan on Saturday, May 31, 2025 to propose. Brandon had been in touch with Kennedi's sister Karrington for months to plan a surprise proposal. Karrington's job was to convince the family to do family photos. She sold the plan by telling Kennedi she wanted to do a photoshoot for Kennedi's niece Wren, and of course while we were at it, we may as well take some long overdue family photos. Everyone was on board and we decided that we'd do both casual and dressed up family photos. We found a date that worked for everyone and planned our outfits. The morning of May 31, 2025, Kennedi went to work all while Brandon flew into Michigan on zero hours sleep after anchoring the 10:30 pm sportscast the night before. His mom Lisa had already landed the day prior and picked Brandon up from the airport; they grabbed food and Brandon caught a quick nap in the hotel room. Lisa and Brandon then headed to Kennedi's parents Robert and Darlene's house to begin setting up. Kennedi rushed home and finished getting ready as Harjas (Kennedi's friend and our wonderful photoshoot photographer) was taking photos. All this time, Brandon and Lisa were parked down the street. We took our casual family pictures and later Kennedi, Karrington and Darlene went to change into their dresses. They did a great job of distracting Kennedi as everyone else helped set up outside. As Kennedi came downstairs and was about to walk outside, Darlene asked Kennedi a question to make her turn around so she didn't see the decorations before walking outside. To her surprise, her future fiancé stood outside at the end of a red carpet lined with candles and covered in rose petals in front of a sign reading "WILL YOU MARRY ME?" Brandon had pulled off the perfect proposal! Then we went to casino and tried to win back all the money Brandon spent on the ring. We lost more money! LOL
