One Year Ago Today (5/2/2025)

On the morning of May 2, 2025, the sun showed up early-like it knew it had an important job to do. Our backyard had never looked so happy, the sunshine wrapped everything in a warm golden glow that felt like a hug. I remember standing inside, peeking out the window, watching guests find their seats and hearing little bursts of laughter fill the air. My hands were shaking just enough to remind me that this was real. We weren't just planning a wedding anymore. We were about to start a marriage. My older sister, Amy, stood at the front, holding her notes and looking official. She wasn't just officiating-she was making sure the whole thing felt like us. Her beautiful words meaning so much to Brandon and I, moving everyone in attendance. My younger sister, Matti, my Matron of Honor, stayed glued to my side while keeping an eye on all the details. Her first-born son, Cillian, Squish as I like to call him, secured the rings and helped lead the wedding party down the aisle. The eldest grandchild, Harper, my beautiful creative niece, rocked the aisle as a Junior Bridesmaid. My adorable spunky niece Monroe dancing down the aisle while littering the forest floor with flowers would have made anyone smile ear to ear. And then there is Eric, The Best Man, the man that came from out of state to stand proudly next to his best friend on his wedding day. As I waited inside, I could see them joking around, Eric keeping Brandon laughing to kick the nerves. It was finally time; I stepped outside and walked to where my parents were waiting for me to walk me down the aisle. With my Dad on my left and my Mom on my right, I felt like I could float the rest of the way. I made it to Brandon and in that second all the noise faded away. It was just us, standing in the middle of our own forest, promising forever where we'd someday plant more flowers, host barbecues and maybe argue about where to put the patio furniture. We laughed a lot. We cried a lot. We said our vows with wobbly voices but full hearts. When we finally kissed, our family cheered so loudly the chirping of the frogs seemed to grow and the breeze picked up, like nature was applauding. Now, whenever the sun shines warmly across our backyard, it feels like a little reminder from that day: This is where forever started.
