Tours by appointment - nesscountychamber.com/skyscraper-of-the-plains.html The four-story, 18,700 sq. ft. stone building was once the tallest building between Topeka and Denver and listed on both the national Register of Historic Landmarks and a one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Architecture. Upon its completion in 1890, it was called "The finest and most imposing structure west of Topeka." Today, the space houses the Chamber of Commerce, a public meeting space, and the lower level was transformed into the Prairie Mercantile.
Open Wednesday through Friday 1 to 4 p.m. The store and gift shop includes foods, books, ironworks, pictures, wheat weavings, post rock carvings, quilts, etc., made in and indicative of Kansas. The store is ran by volunteers and all profits go toward the remodeling of the bank building.
Open Tuesday through Thursday 1 to 5 p.m. or by appointment The Ness County Historical Society currently resides in the large, two-story, historic Beardslee building on the corner of Pennsylvania and Sycamore in Ness City. Built in 1900, the historic structure houses the museum's constantly increasing number of artifacts. Guests of the museum can also visit the complete replica of Ness City’s one-room, old school house building. Made of native stone and built in 1882, it was Ness City’s first school house. The Historical Society also uses the metal building to the east of the old school house to serve as the Oil and Agricultural Museum.
