Even if Going to the Sun Road is not open or you do not have a reservation, Lake McDonald can be reached without a reservation, and the village at the lake is very neat to explore!
Going to the Sun Road may or may not be fully open this time of year. This is entirely dependent on the snow levels throughout the winter. If the full road is open, reservations are required and must be purchased the day before you plan to travel the road, but this is a must see while you are in the area. If the road is not fully open, reservations may still be required, so please check into this before going to the park. Even to the spring turnaround point, the road is beautiful and worth driving! If you are up for the adventure, many people rent bicycles and bike up the road past where it is closed. This is the only way to see the rest of the road while they are still removing snow.
