Question

Do I need pesos?

Answer

It’s helpful to arrive in Mexico with some pesos to cover your first day. If you’re using a car service, you’ll likely get a discount by paying in pesos. There is an ATM in town, and while we've never had issues, we've heard it can run out of cash during peak season. Most restaurants accept credit cards, but some are cash-only, and local businesses always prefer cash when possible. For activities like beach massages, paddleboard rentals, and small vendors, you’ll need pesos. We recommend bringing some with you or withdrawing cash early in your trip!

Question

Is Sayulita Safe?

Answer

Yes! Sayulita is a safe and welcoming town, but like anywhere, it’s smart to take precautions to minimize the risk of petty theft. Avoid carrying your entire wallet – Bring only what you need for the day. Use a separate card – We recommend using a card that isn’t linked to all your autopay bills in case of loss. Lock up valuables – Keep extra cash and cards in your hotel safe. Stay aware – Keep purses and wallets in sight when out and about. A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring a stress-free and fun trip!

Question

Is the Water Safe to Drink in Sayulita?

Answer

Tap water in Mexico isn’t safe to drink, but Sayulita hotels and rentals provide purified water jugs in each room, which are safe to drink from. At restaurants, water safety is generally not a concern as they are accustomed to serving visitors. To be extra cautious: Ice cubes – Look for ice with holes in the center, which means it’s purified. Fruits & Vegetables – Avoid eating raw produce unless you know it’s been washed with bottled or purified water. Brushing your teeth – It’s best to use bottled water when brushing your teeth. Taking a few simple precautions will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip! 💧

Question

Will My Chargers and Appliances Work in Mexico?

Answer

Yes! Mexico uses the same electrical outlets and voltage (120V, 60Hz) as the U.S. and Canada, so your chargers and appliances will work without an adapter or converter.

Question

Should I pack valuable items in my checked luggage?

Answer

No, you should never pack valuable items—such as jewelry, GoPro cameras, or other expensive electronics—in your checked luggage. Baggage handlers at the PV airport, especially for flights originating from the U.S., may spot valuable items on X-ray scans and take the opportunity to inspect further. To avoid any risk, always keep valuables in your carry-on or leave them at home.

Question

Do I have to speak Spanish to get around Sayulita?

Answer

It is always best to try to speak a little Spanish when you are in Mexico, even if it is simply to say por favor, gracias and hola. However, there are quite a few restaurants in town with bilingual staff, and you will be able to get by. The locals in Sayulita are amazingly adept at understanding “Spanglish” and hand gestures, and are very friendly and encouraging when you try out new words. As with anywhere you travel, kindness and courtesy and trying to speak the language go a long way with opening up communication.

Question

Do taxis accept credit cards?

Answer

Taxis in and around Sayulita mostly do not accept credit cards. Make sure you have pesos when traveling by bus or cab and try to have small denominations of bills.
