FAQs

Question

Why Colombia?

Answer

Boris' parents are from Cartagena, and he spent many childhood summers there. Celebrating our wedding in Cartagena will give our U.S. family and friends a glimpse into a place that has shaped Boris’ life, and now our relationship, and allow us to celebrate with the family members who continue to live there.

Question

How do I get to Cartagena?

Answer

You fly into Cartagena's Rafael Núñez International Airport. You’ll see a taxi stand as you exit the arrivals area, and it’s a quick trip to where you will stay. A taxi to your hotel should be 12,000 COP.

Question

How long should I stay?

Answer

We will be in Cartagena in the week leading up to the wedding and look forward to pre-wedding revelry with many of you. We understand that vacation days are precious, and guarantee that even a quicker trip would be worth it :)

Question

Hablas español?

Answer

Cartagena is the Colombian city most friendly to non-Spanish speakers, and some restaurants frequented by visitors will have English menus and bilingual staff. Your average Cartagenero, including cab drivers, will not speak English.

Question

How do I get around?

Answer

It’s easy to get around El Centro, San Diego, and Getsemaní by foot. Taxis in Cartagena are not metered, but are priced by zone—with some variation based on time of day and your accent. Cabs will be 7-9,000 COP to most places you will want to go.

Question

What if I want to venture beyond Cartagena?

Answer

If you are looking to visit other parts of Colombia, consider the coastal town of Santa Marta, the lush national park of Parque Tayrona, Medellín, Bogotá, and the Amazon (near Leticia). Particularly adventurous travelers might enjoy the accessible-only-by-plane Pacific Coast, flying into Bahía Solano and heading down to the small fishing town of El Valle.

Question

What does “guayabera” mean?

Answer

A guayabera is a traditional linen shirt worn throughout the Caribbean distinguished by two rows of pleats running down the front. White, long-sleeved guayaberas, typically without pockets, are standard at weddings in Cartagena, and are often worn with white or other light-colored pants. If you are guayabera-less but don’t want to be, you can order one online or pick one up in Cartagena before the wedding. Otherwise feel free to wear any other collared shirt that will keep you cool.

Question

What if I want to wear a dress?

Answer

Cocktail dresses are perfect. Women in Colombia often wear formal gowns to weddings, even when the men are in less formal guayaberas. Feel no pressure to match, but know that fancier long dresses would not be out of place.

Question

Is Cartagena safe?

Answer

Yes.
