The Stanley Hotel If you’re planning a little exploring while you’re in the area, the Stanley Hotel in nearby Estes Park is one of Colorado’s most iconic spots. Opened in 1909 by inventor Freelan Oscar Stanley, it was designed as a luxurious mountain retreat and helped put Estes Park on the map as a destination town. Perched above town with sweeping views of the Rockies, the hotel is best known today as the inspiration for Stephen King’s The Shining after he stayed there in the 1970s. Many visitors come for its historic charm, while others are drawn by its reputation as one of the most “haunted” hotels in the country—complete with ghost tours and spooky stories. Even if you’re not staying overnight, it’s worth a visit to walk the grounds, grab a drink, or take in the views on your way to Rocky Mountain National Park—just about 10 minutes away.
