We met at a summer math research program (combinatorics on partial words!) in Greensboro, North Carolina and did our share of flirting, note-passing, and made-up programming questions just to get the other's attention (okay that was mostly me). Alas, at the end of summer Andrew was to drive back to Maryland and I was to return to Michigan. We just couldn't bear to be apart, so we decided to meet up in Ohio at Hotel-Granny-Bodnar where we decided that maybe we could do a long distance relationship, and even though they "never work" maybe ours would. For five long years I worked on my math PhD at UC San Diego in California and Andrew worked on his math PhD at Rutgers in New Jersey. We flew back and forth about once a month and talked every night. By the time we graduated, we were both nervously looking for jobs in the same city because a 2700 mile commute just wouldn't cut it anymore. Miraculously, we now both have great jobs (Andrew at Microsoft and I at Google) and are finally living together in Bellevue, WA. Last Christmas, we found ourselves back in Ohio visiting my grandparents yet again. Andrew insisted we go for a walk down by Lake Erie one evening, where we first decided we were in this for the long haul. Everyone else was going out that night but something in his voice told me we should stay behind. As we neared the water Andrew started singing "Fly Me To the Moon," a favorite love song of ours, and tears of happiness filled my eyes as I realized what was coming. He asked me to marry him and I was so excited to say yes to spending all of my days with the love of my life. Never have I met a kinder, sweeter, more wonderful person who makes me so happy every day :)
