How Our Paths Crossed

The Angel Shot

Living in Denver, Christian and Emma met on Bumble, a dating app where women make the first move. Emma remembers seeing Christian's profile and being struck by his smile and adventurous side. In contrast, Christian remembers seeing a picture of Emma in a teddy bear hat and could feel her fun personality through the screen. After talking over the phone for a few weeks, they decided to meet at a bar called Inga's Alpine tavern. Emma parked her car and looked up to see a handsome guy walking in wearing what resembled a lumberjack outfit (cute) and got out of her car to meet him. They locked eyes in the restaurant and felt something immediately. A spark. They sat down, ordered drinks and some food, and delved into an immersive discussion that she forgot to check her phone. After probably an hour and a half, Emma excused herself to the bathroom and quickly returned. Abruptly, the waitress comes over and asks, "Is your name Emma?" "Yes..." Emma said questioningly. "I have your mom on the phone," said the waitress. Internally, Emma knew that her mom would not call her at this restaurant - who could it be? Christian excused himself, thinking she had set this up while using the restroom by ordering an Angel Shot, a covert way of letting a bartender or server know that they're on a date that's not working out. He fully expected her not to be there when he returned. "Hello?" Emma said. "EMMA. WHY ARE YOU NOT ANSWERING YOUR PHONE?!" She recognized the voice of her adoring stepmom, Kim. Emma quickly explained that she was okay and forgot to text her roommate that she had arrived safely at the restaurant. "How did you know I was here...?" Emma said. "Well, your roommate started freaking out when she couldn't get a response from you, so she contacted your sister, who has had a couple of drinks; she freaked out and then called us," Kim said. After reassuring her that she was okay, she ended the call and checked her phone. Twenty-two missed calls—17 missed text messages. How did she not notice?! Christian was debating when he should return to the table on the other side of the restaurant. "Okay...maybe two more minutes," Christian thought. At the table, Emma responded to everyone just as Christian returned. She quickly explained what was happening, and they laughed it off. What an unbelievable situation. They continued the date for a while, and then Emma had to go since she had an early morning ahead of her. Christian walked Emma to her car, hugged her, and asked if she would like to go out again soon. The twists and turns they have been on started from their first date and continued into the pandemic, moving to Louisiana, going through hurricanes and significant life changes, and leading them to where they are now in Frisco, Texas. They wouldn't change it for the world.
