Question

What is Haldi?

Answer

The Haldi ceremony is a traditional pre-wedding ritual in India. It is a joyful and vibrant event, typically held a day or two before the wedding ceremony. The purpose of the Haldi ceremony is to purify and bless the couple before their wedding. During the ceremony, turmeric (haldi) paste is applied to the bride and groom by their family and friends. The turmeric is mixed with other ingredients such as sandalwood, rose water, and sometimes milk or yogurt, creating a yellow paste. The bride and groom are usually seated, and loved ones take turns applying the paste on their face, arms, and feet, while singing traditional songs or chanting blessings. The yellow color of the turmeric is symbolic of auspiciousness, fertility, and protection. It is also believed to bring a natural glow to the skin and ward off any evil spirits. The Haldi ceremony is often a fun, lively event filled with laughter, music, and sometimes playful teasing. After the ceremony, the bride and groom typically take a bath to cleanse themselves before the wedding. The Haldi ceremony is considered an important part of the wedding celebrations, marking the beginning of the couple's new journey together and providing blessings for a happy, prosperous marriage.
