In mid September, as Rebecca was just settling into college life, Jack noticed her as the attractive librarian he had never seen before. For a few weeks he approached her to help him find a book - C.S. Lewis' "The Four Loves" - until he worked up the courage to toss a hand-written letter across the desk. Rebecca was quite overwhelmed and flattered! Unfortunately for Jack, she did not respond that night like he had hoped. Waking up the next morning he thought it was a swing and a miss, especially when they crossed paths and avoided eye contact that day. Except it wasn't a swing and a miss! Before Jack gave up all hope, Rebecca texted Jack and reciprocated his desire to get to know each other. After a coffee 'date' and late night worship gathering, they became virtually inseparable.
After hanging out together for almost a month going on walks, eating lunches, and going on an underwhelming museum date, Rebecca and Jack were about to be apart for the first time. As the two prepared to leave for Thanksgiving break, Rebecca grew curious as to what exactly their companionship had become. She asked timidly what she should refer to Jack as when she talks about him to her family, and Jack confidently responded without a beat of thought "you can call me your boyfriend." The feeling was beyond mutual and the two looked forward to telling their families all about the other.
Jack was the first to say "I love you" of the two, and he had wanted to say it so many times before he actually did. When he finally did say it, it took him a while to find the right words to speak about his feelings. While Jack thought, Rebecca grew nervous and excited as she suspected what he might say. As they sat on ACU's 'couple bench,' Jack expressed his feelings to Rebecca, and she responded in the most awkward way possible - by saying it back after "kinda sorta maybe!" She was overwhelmed with excitement!
In December, Rebecca invited Jack to go to a winter formal with her as her date. Rebecca wore a long, flattering, purple velvet dress and Jack wore a very dashing jacket with an open collar. The two felt like they were floating as they ironically sat outside the dance room the whole time. They chatted, laughed, and took their first good photo together! After the formal the two went on a walk, to late night worship, and parked in Rebecca's dorm parking lot. As they sat in the car practicing eye-contact, Rebecca misinterpreted one of Jacks moves to touch her cheek as a move to kiss her! Without thinking she blurted that Jack could kiss her if he wanted to, catching him quite off guard. After working up the courage, Jack and Rebecca finally had their first kiss!
Jack and Rebecca have been practically inseparable during their semesters at Abilene Christian University, and have spent much of their breaks with each other's families. From three months in spending a week at each other's houses, to having Rebecca's whole family over to Jacks house at the fourth of July last year, they have grown in the fellowship of each other and their family. And even when they haven't been close during breaks and a semester abroad for Rebecca, they have persevered and are ready to tie the knot in December! Jack proposed to Rebecca in December of 2025 on his property in Tennessee with a trail of tea lights and a letter.
