What is a Kweh- kweh? The kwe-kwe is a celebration that has a direct linkage to our African heritage/tradition. This meeting of the families and celebration of the union usually takes place the night before the marriage of an Afro-Guyanese couple. It is an evening marked by African drumming, folk song singing, dancing, and jubilation. The purpose of the Kweh-kweh is to emphasize new relationships created by the union. Traditionally, it also provides instructional and psychological preparation to the bride and groom on their journey of marriage. The kwe-kwe also gives an opportunity for others in the community to give marital advice and share their wisdom.
