Car rentals are cheap and worth it! At least twice a week we drive to over side of the island. We always have a stocked cooler with drinks and snacks, and snorkeling gear, and extra towels. If possible rent from the airport. Makes for an easy Pick-up and return. If you chose a rental company, not at the airport, you will have to call them when you land and they will come to pick you up. Be sure to have this information BEFORE you leave. It's difficult to get the correct information once you are there. EVERYONE will just tell you "Yes, yes this is me, come with me to get your car!" Make sure to look for the rental car company logos on their shirts. Don't rent a scooter unless you understand the high risk. If you do, make sure you wear a good helmet and expect the unexpected.
1) Almost all downtown roads that run north-south, parallel to the seafront, have priority. Roads running east-west must yield. 2) Most downtown roads are one-way. Look for arrows on the street name signs, black and white arrow signs on corners, or just check which direction cars are parked in. Some street names are located on the building closest to the corner. 3) Don't park on red curbs. It means no parking and the police may take your car or plates and fine you. No 'double file' parking downtown. Do not use TAXI parking. 4) Beware of TOPES, the local speed bumps. They're not always clearly marked and can be quite a shock if you hit them at speed.
You can use dollars. Tipping - Tip in cash if possible. Use the same judgment as you would at home. I will try to keep this updated!!
18... doesn't mean it's a good idea LOL
About 60 Minutes....but that would be tragic! Give yourself at least half a day. We usually go on Sundays. It's mainly locals and we stay all day. There is no power, cell service, stores, or gas so be prepared! Get a full tank, snacks and cooler. There are places to eat and drink but not many.
Ok, controversial I know, but you decide to, ONLY buy from Farmacia Doris Ramonera. Why? Because most sell FAKE medicine. This is the only one my family trusts. We usually stock up on Z packs, albuterol, and amoxicillin. Located off Av. Rafael E. Melgar (main road) and 7th. Just a few storefronts down 7th.
You must have a passport book to fly internationally. If you only have a passport card you will need to get issues a book!
