December 22, 2019. Andrew called me early in the day asking if I wanted to go on a boat ride for tonight's date. He said he had found a coupon when he was at base in Coronado. When I plugged in the address in the car, it pulled up a gondola company in San Diego Marina. I immediately was raving to Andrew about the gondolas I remembered seeing in Venice when I had lived in Italy for the year. He acted confused about what a gondola was so I kept trying to describe how it is like a big Italian canoe. When we arrived, they offered us a bottle of wine and a blanket. We sat through this romantic sunset cruise through Coronado's canals. Toward the very end of the ride, Andrew nervously got in front of me and proposed. Turns out, there was no coupon. He knew what a gondola was and it was all part of his plan. Thankfully, I had just painted my nails two days before!
Andrew and I met online in June 2019. He was stationed in Coronado with the Navy. He wasn't sure what he was looking for and I definitely didn't think that I would be finding my forever at 22. All it took was one week and we fell in love. Only a week after we met, Andrew had to go underway for a month. For most couples that would have been the end. But with each underway and deployment our love grew stronger. We learned to embrace the time together and learned to deal with the distance.
