Let me tell you about this girl...

There are those whose stories bring tears and those whose bring laughter. Ideally both. But Rom-Com we are not, no Harry, no Sally, no Tom, no Meg. I am Bill, she is Cate and if through sheer happenstance our story brings both and storyline morphs into movie-line, know it is God who scripts such things for his children's delight. I met Caitlin freshman year at Auburn through the ministry of RUF. Friendship ensued and how could it not? Though more studious and serious (and frankly mature) than me, Caitlin was witty, sassy, and smart. Conversation came easy and often, ensured through our list of mutual friends. We were the best of friends but nothing more. Four years later this sentiment still rang true, ensured now through a steady supply of weddings and football gatherings. And then it didn’t, the wedding of one William Haynes shifting the tide forever. Two weeks later I was the recipient of a concise but forward email. “I like you,” it read. My mind raced. How could this be? Weren’t we just friends? And sure she was cute and fun and a hell of a dancer… WAIT DO I LIKE HER TOO?? “No, but can we still be friends?” I put down my phone. I'm the worst. How could I do that to her? Was I even telling the truth? A year later these thoughts again surfaced. Working in Colorado with Young Life, I lay awake one night when it hit me: SHE WAS THE ONE! Life suddenly made sense! The next day I awoke unsure of what I had experienced. A dream? No. Theology told me “God.” Movies told me “fate.” But beyond the metaphysical questions lay a reality I couldn't ignore. Caitlin was cool AF and I had to let her know. Two weeks later I mailed her a five page letter. “I got your letter,” she said. “But I’m dating someone.” (awkward silence) “Ah, cool cool… so… um… think about it?" Two weeks later we talked again. "I'm no longer dating someone," she said." "Ah, I'm sorry." (awkward silence) "So are you free next week?" She was. And still is... for me. Gosh I love her.
