How Caleb Met Bettye-Grace

October 26, 2019

My best friend, John, was going to this Halloween party and he wanted me to join. I was not thrilled about the idea of driving to Clinton for a party when my bed was calling my name, but for some reason, John convinced me to go. We got to the party and as soon as I walked in, I noticed this very pretty girl dressed as Patrick Star from Spongebob. I looked at John and said, "Dude, look over there." Being the best, and always uplifting friend in my times of doubt, he encouragingly responded with, "way out of your league, no chance." So of course I decided to approach with caution. I went up to her and said "nice crocs." Consequently, she responded with, "Don't talk about my crocs!" I quickly accepted defeat and came to terms with the fact that I had absolutely no game. As the night went on, John decided to abandon me so instead, I sat in this comfy chair, socialized with a few strangers, and picked up my phone to read my favorite sports message board. The house began to clear, but John was nowhere to be found, so I kept reading, then suddenly the girl walked into the room and sat on the couch next to me and said, "You seem nice. Wanna hear about my night?" She proceeded to tell me about her evening, which led to us talking about our lives, and exchanging phone numbers. Part of me felt like this had gone so well because she was merely being nice. So, I decided to make one more move. "Hey, so I actually like you, and I want to get to know you better. Let me take you on a date sometime." She agreed, and the rest was history.

How Bettye-Grace Said Yes

Caleb had a lazy, yet full Saturday planned for us; a double date with Jessica and Jackson and dinner with Aunt Stacy and Uncle Ben was what I thought to be the plan for the day. We decided to go to brunch and invited my parents along. My dad was busy so my mom decided to join us. While we were waiting for a table, we decided to go do a little shopping. I bought a couple of outfits and then my mom had an "emergency" and suddenly had to leave, so it ended up just being Caleb and I for brunch which had now turned into lunch. While eating, we discussed the events to follow for the evening. Caleb was very insistent that I wear one of my new outfits to the escape room for our double date, and I, not seeing the benefit, was adamantly against it. After arguing back and forth for five minutes about it, Caleb said, "Well you can't blame me. It will be your fault." Quickly the wheels in my head started to turn. I did not know how or when, but I had a feeling that I was going to be a fiancé by the end of the day. Jackson ended up not being able to come to the escape room so we invited Alex to join us. The escape room that we were doing was the Temple, and the objective was to find the lost gem. After soaring through the escape room and getting to the last puzzle, I took over (like I normally do) and everyone took a step back and let me solve the last one. The podium in the middle started to rise, and there was something shining within it. Caleb ushered me over, and before I could realize what was really inside the podium, Caleb grabbed the ring, got down on one knee, and quickly said, "Bettye-Grace, will you marry me?" It took a second for me to realize what was being asked, but once I did, I said, "YES." Now, I can not wait to to start ours lives and journey together as husband and wife.
