Bethany and Mitchell met at a Halloween party in New York City's East Village the weekend before Hurricane Sandy back in 2012. He was dressed as "captain of the debate team" and she was a lobster.

After a few months of casual correspondence, Mitchell offered to take Bethany on a tour of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. They had tea, wandered the waterfront, visited a feral cat sanctuary, ate gluten-free chicken nuggets, and enjoyed cocktails at Extra Fancy, which soon became a neighborhood haunt. Mitchell then asked Bethany to accompany him to a New Year's Eve party. The rest is history.

Mitch asked Bethany. It was supposed to happen on vacation (but he was worried about taking a ring through TSA security checkpoints). Then, it was supposed to happen during an impromptu dinner party (but the crowd was busy playing a game late into the night). Finally, he asked while Bethany was tidying after the guests had left. It was perfect.
