Phil and Beth met in memoir class at Chatham University in early 2016. Beth remembers seeing Phil walk into class on the first day and being excited to see a cute guy (men were scarce at Chatham). During the second week of class, Phil was surprised when the professor announced that each student had to read their homework assignment out loud. Phil’s essay was about ten pages long and by the end of it he was thirsty. Beth passed him an Altoid for his dry mouth and that was their first interaction. Beth and Phil ended up spending more time together with friends outside of class. In the summer of 2016 they attended an M83 show at Stage AE, where they shared a kiss during the last song. Beth still tells the story of how electric that first kiss was; it made her wonder if there could be a possible future between them. They spent lots of time together over the next few years, going to readings and shows, traveling between coasts, and spending time with each other’s families. Over the 5 years of them dating, they learned many lessons about communication, compromise, and how to build a love that is a safe haven from the rest of the world. On June 4th 2022, Phil took Beth out to breakfast and then on a little drive around Shadyside in Pittsburgh. Phil made an excuse to walk around Chatham’s campus. He took Beth to the side of the library - near the classroom where they first met. There, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. She said yes. That evening, they went to see Bon Iver. The concert was at Stage AE, where they first kissed, bringing their whole relationship full circle. Bon Iver’s “Beth/Rest” will be the first song they dance to at their wedding. Beth and Phil stayed in Pittsburgh after graduate school. Beth is a Proposal and Marketing Coordinator at The Efficiency Network. Phil is a Web Content Manager at the Integrated Innovation Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. They recently adopted a miniature schnauzer named Walter. They are so excited to celebrate their wedding day with their friends and family.
