We will forever remember the day we met on Sunday June 12th, 2016. Earlier that day, people around the world woke up to the tragic news of a mass shooting at the Pulse gay night club in Orlando, Florida. A few hours later that evening, thousands of people in San Francisco gathered to hold a spontaneous candlelit vigil in honor of the 49 people who had lost their lives. We were both individually looking for our respective friends. At some point while scanning the large swath of people we made eye contact. The first hello was spontaneous and sparks started to fly. We marched arm in arm to City Hall, while intermittently re-lighting each other’s candles because they kept on going out in the San Francisco winds. We parted ways that evening and promised we would see each other again very shortly. Since then, the rest is as they say “history”. We have been and continue to discover our joint passion for hiking, traveling, reading, arts, and languages. We enjoy each other’s company and have come to appreciate each other’s warmth and kindness. Over time, we have met each other’s families many times and our parents even had a chance to meet each other even though they live more than 5,000 miles apart. On September 1, 2019, while driving back from a camping trip, we started to talk about spending the rest of our lives together. And on January 31, 2020, in San Francisco City Hall, under the watchful eye of our witnesses and Harvey Milk’s bust, we said “I do”.
