The History
The cookie table likely originated among European immigrants during the Great Depression when couples could not afford a wedding cake. Close friends and family would step in to bake cookies instead. Many of the cookies were, and are, made from scratch using favorite family recipes, or a special cookie that the person is known for. People tend to make a double batch which is usually about 6 dozen.
The name really says it all – a table full of cookies! But to the Western Pennsylvania region, it’s so much more! Quite regularly, hundreds of dozens of cookies end up on display during the big day. To locals, the Wedding Cookie Table is such a strong tradition that the day just wouldn’t seem complete without it.
