This is always the first thing that comes to mind when I'm brainstorming Auckland activities. It's out in the Waitakere Ranges and gives you a great view of the rainforest and Huia Dam, as well as containing lots of information about the native wildlife and history.
Rangitoto is one of the more famous volcanoes in Auckland. It's an island off the east coast, and it has a fascinating history. If you like walking up hills and mountains surrounded by greenery and wildlife, this is a great option for you. However, if you don't like walking, worry not! There's a tractor-train that you can ride up to a certain point while hearing commentary about the island and its background.
If you'd like an outing that's a little more laid-back, the Auckland Art Gallery is a nice place to visit. It's a beautiful, modern building that features a broad range of art styles across four floors. There will be something for everyone, regardless of preferences.
This striking building is another great place to go, especially if the weather is not cooperating. It has a variety of artifacts and sets from different places and eras, and there is also Weird and Wonderful - a room for children that includes fun and interactive displays and exhibits. The museum also hosts various temporary events and exhibitions, such as the New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year competition.
If you love animals, then of course you need to visit Auckland Zoo. Auckland Zoo is heavily conservation-focused, and actively promotes the protection of our native wildlife and the environment. Plus, this is your chance to see a real, live kiwi in the special, night-simulating enclosure, among other native species.
At the heart of the Auckland CBD sits the Sky Tower - also known as "The Syringe" among some locals, for obvious reasons. It provides an incredible 360 view of Auckland city, and there are a cafe and a restaurant to provide you with sustenance while you gaze upon Auckland from above. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, you can also walk around the outside rim of the Sky Tower, and even jump off it, guided by wires to the ground 192m below!
If you're keen for a trip to a natural, rugged NZ beach, Bethells is a great option. You can decide whether to visit the seaside or the lake, you can take a boogie board or even a scrap of lino and do some dune boarding, and when you've exhausted yourself with your fun, beachy activities, you can grab some delicious food and refreshments at the little Bethells Cafe. Just watch out for that black sand!
Once you've spent a bit of time out west and are feeling peckish, Elevation will provide you with tasty food and a gorgeous view of Auckland. If you head there for dinner, you will get to enjoy a lovely sunset view while munching on some gourmet pizza or fancy fish and chips.
