Things To Do

Despite it's reputation as a sleepy part of the world, there are things to do and food to eat in western Massachusetts. Due to the rural nature of some of this area, renting a car to drive to attractions is recommended. Enjoy some of the best the west has to offer!

Smith College Museum of Art

20 Elm Street, Northampton, MA 01063
, (413) 585-2760

Smith College has a lot to offer including a gem of a museum of art tucked away on the campus.

Berkshire Brewing Company

12 Railroad Street, Deerfield, MA 01373
, (413) 665-6600

One of the more established craft breweries in western Massachusetts, stop by for a tour or a brew. If you meet the owner, Gary, say hello - he's a friend of Sara's dad.

Norwottuck Rail Trail

446 Damon Rd, Northampton, MA 01060

This pedestrian and bike trail extends for 11 miles from Northampton to Belchertown. It is beautifully quiet in winter, although plowing can be patchy. It's a great spot for those looking for a place to run, as sidewalks can be hard to come by outside of downtown Northampton.

R. Michelson Galleries

132 Main Street, Northampton, MA 01060
, (413) 586-3964

Another great offering for the fine arts in downtown Northampton.

Eric Carle Museum

125 West Bay Road, Amherst, MA 01002

This isn't just for kids! The Eric Carle museum is a lighthearted and education display of many of the illustrator's works including The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Beneski Museum of Natural History

11 Barrett Hill Road, Amherst, MA 01002
, (413) 542-2165

Amherst College has a small natural history museum with an extensive collection of dinosaur footprints. Downtown Amherst is also a lovely place to spend time with great cafes and restaurants.

Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame

1000 Hall of Fame Avenue, Springfield, MA 01105
, (877) 446-6752

A short drive south on the highway takes you to the Basketball Hall of Fame. For those who don't know, basketball was invented in western Massachusetts.

Berkshire East Mountain Resort

66 Thunder Mountain Road, Charlemont, MA 01339
, (413) 339-6618

For winter sports, Berkshire East was the local mountain where the Young siblings learned to ski. It's a nice small mountain in the Berkshires, making it more affordable and accessible than the big mountains in Vermont. Great for beginners too.

Emily Dickinson Museum

280 Main Street, Amherst, MA 01002
, (413) 542-8161

Visit the poet's birthplace and where she spent a large portion of her life.

Mount Holyoke Range State Park

1500 West St, Amherst, MA 01002

For those willing to brave the cold, Mount Holyoke range offers great hiking. With the leaves down, you can get some nice views of the Pioneer Valley.

For all the days along the way
