On October 2, 2021, after a week or two of chatting on a little app called Bumble, John and Kaitlyn finally decided to meet in person. Neither of them was exactly looking for a relationship. Both were happily settling into the idea of being #singleforever, buying a house, and living blissfully with their fur babies. But fate (and maybe a shooting star Kaitlyn wished on while visiting family in Connecticut) had other plans. Their first date almost didn’t happen thanks to what can only be described as a very Atlanta problem: a hostage situation shut down every road in Kaitlyn’s neighborhood. With John on his way to pick her up (her car had been totaled just weeks before), Kaitlyn had no choice but to trek through the woods until she found a spot where John could swoop in with his cherry-red Dodge Challenger. Talk about a dramatic rom-com opening. Dinner at Ru Sans and drinks at Monday Night Garage followed, with conversation flowing so easily that the date just… never really ended. The very next day, John invited Kaitlyn to Caffeine and Octane, where they bonded over John’s love of cars and Kaitlyn’s less-than-great luck with them (a perfect balance, really).
