It only took 3 weeks after landing in Washington for Meg's social restlessness to reach a fever pitch. As all modern love stories begin, it was off to the apps. It was an instant match and the date was set. On a Thursday in August 2016, Meg came home from a long day at the hospital and was prepared to collapse on the couch, ready to reschedule. But her sister Kirsten, visiting from Pittsburgh, would have none of it. Matt, early (of course), excited and considering warnings from a group of concerned colleagues (she was a stranger and a surgeon with knife skills after all), met Meg at The Sovereign in Georgetown. They connected instantly- Meg talked for about an hour before the bartender was able to get a word in and ask for a drink order. This was a level of conversation Matt was NOT ready for- but was surprised by how fun and natural it felt. Fast forward 1 month: Matt was direct and persistent- so at a winery in Virginia, over a bottle of wine and Le Diplomate pastries, they made it "official." And the rest, as they say, is history. These past few years have had endless moments of adventure, growth, and love, and we can't wait to be married and celebrate this special time with our dear friends and family!
A whirlwind of adventures ultimately culminated in a dream proposal day disguised as a “DC Christmas Adventure Day.” From beginning the day at brunch at Tabard Inn, to the Christmas Concert at the National Cathedral, followed by drinks at the Round Robin bar at the Willard Hotel, the day was already wonderful. Later on though, despite the pouring rain, Matt somehow convinced Meg to drive out to their favorite monument: the Jefferson Memorial. Given the weather, they had the monument to themselves and that’s where Matt ultimately popped the question. A close friend was secretly hiding to capture the moment on camera (as seen in the photo below). The engagement ring is also sentimental as it contains diamonds that previously belonged to Meg's mom. The celebratory festivities then began at Martin’s Tavern for a champagne toast in the “Proposal Booth” where JFK famously proposed to Jacqueline Kennedy. Dinner was next, but what Meg didn’t know, was that both of their families would be there to surprise them. And to make it even more special, dinner was at The Sovereign, where we had had our first date. It was a magical day filled with all things classic DC and family…the absolute perfect proposal and a day that we will always cherish.
