The year is 2015 and dating apps are still a relatively new phenomenon. Tinder has not yet become the butt of many jokes and upstarts like Hinge are still gaining early traction. And then there was Bumble... a newer entrant into the world of mobile dating apps that added a new twist... two right swipes equal a match, but only the girl can choose whether she wants to message the guy - he's not allowed to make the first move. In early November 2015, we both swiped right, matched, and Becka decided that she'd open the conversation with a very basic and safe... "Hey". Given how unique and attention grabbing the opener was, Dan immediately responded back with a witty, yet tasteful response. Now this is where many of these conversations end -- they remain online, never amount to anything in real life, and you move on to swiping through a new batch of faces. Knowing this, Dan decided to make a quick offer to meet Becka for a drink or dinner... but there was only one problem... she didn't respond... for weeks. You don't want to be THAT guy who continues to message after you get ghosted by the girl. Now this isn't particularly out of the ordinary - again, many of these mobile app "matches" end before they even begin, so Dan did the natural thing... forgot about it and went back to living his regularly scheduled life. Then something very unexpected happened - it was Thanksgiving weekend in late November, almost a month after the initial match, and Becka decided to respond by messaging Dan in the app. Knowing that Becka wasn't likely to respond again, Dan decided to be very direct - he asked for her number so that he could text her directly to set-up a date. After the message, Dan waited for a response... for another several weeks... when finally Becka decided to text back those fateful 9 digits. Texts were quickly exchanged (Becka was a much better texter than Bumble messager), a first date, sushi dinner was setup, and the rest is history.
