Isla Holbox is pronounced HOLE-bosh, not "hol-box". The name originates from the Mayan language, where the "x" is pronounced as "sh" Isla Holbox is a serene, car-free Mexican island north of the Yucatan Peninsula, defined by sandy streets, vibrant street art, and a laid-back, bohemian atmosphere.
Guests are welcome to start their vacation at any time but most will be arriving either Thursday or Friday before the wedding (on Saturday).
What we recommend doing is staying the night in Cancun the day you fly in and arrange a ride the following morning to the ferry in Chiquila.
The ferry to Holbox is in Chiquilá, about 2 hours from Cancun. Shuttle – Reserve a private or shared shuttle at www.HolboxShuttles.com Taxi – Available at Cancún Airport and hotel zones; fares vary, booking ahead is recommended. Bus (ADO) – Daily service from Cancún’s downtown terminal, ~3.5–4 hours to Chiquilá. Car Rental: Available at the airport. It is recommended to drive during the day, as some roads are not well lit. Cars are not allowed on Holbox—secure parking is available in Chiquilá ($100–150 MXN per day). The ferry from Chiquilá to Holbox duration is 30 minutes and scheduled every 30 minutes from 6:30 am to 9:30 pm. The two ferry companies are Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos (both operate the same route with similar fares). Luggage is brought onboard with you; porters are available at the dock to assist for a small tip. Holbox is a car-free island with sandy roads, so all taxis are golf carts. From the ferry terminal, it’s about a 15-minute ride to the hotel and wedding venue, Villas Caracol. Carry cash in pesos, as cards are not accepted. There is a bank with an ATM on the island. *Hotels in Holbox can also assist in scheduling transportation If you are staying at the Hotel Villas Caracol, you can arrange transfers ahead of time by emailing them directly at recepcion@villascaracol.com.
The wedding is at Hotel Villas Caracol, a small boutique hotel with 16 rooms. We highly recommend staying there with us and immediate family however you are also more than welcome to find a different hotel or Airbnb. When you arrive at the ferry landing, there will be golf cart taxis available to take you where you need to go.
There are several places on the island to rent golf carts / ATVs and bicycles. The island is also walkable.
