We met while serving as missionaries in the New Mexico Farmington mission. Becca was finishing her mission and was in her last area while Austin was just starting in his second area. The trailers we lived in were right next to each other, so we got to know each other really well. Becca had a boyfriend back home, so she wasn't getting to know Austin with any kind of romantic interest. Austin, however, had a bit of a crush on "Sister Cardon". Becca wrote off her boyfriend shortly before going home, and Austin saw his chance. On the last day of Becca's mission, Austin and his companion helped Becca load her luggage into the truck. As the Sisters were leaving the parking lot, Austin stopped them and handed Becca a letter that said to not open it until the day after her release. Of course, Becca and her companion read the letter as soon as they were out of sight. The letter thanked Becca for being so nice and a generally good friend. Then at the end it said that if she were still single when he came home, then he'd love to take her on a date. Becca was surprised by the note, emailed Austin that Monday and said that she was flattered, but that she wouldn't be waiting for him. Well... A year and a half later, Becca happened to be single when Austin came home. She went to his homecoming, they went on an awkward date shortly afterwards, and the rest is history.
Becca had two requirements for an engagement: that it was a surprise and that it was photographed or filmed. Austin managed to pull off all three! Between the Sunday sessions of the October General Conference for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Austin took Becca to the Ogden botanical gardens. There, they found both of their families waiting for them while holding candles or pictures of Austin and Becca. As Austin proposed, Becca was shocked to see the ring they had designed. She had been told that it wouldn't be ready for another 2-3 weeks. Austin's sister, Lexi, made a beautiful video of the whole thing.
