This is a beautiful drive that starts near Bailey and takes you through the pass and to historic Georgetown. You'll climb to timberline at 11,669 feet, while taking in views of Mount Bierstadt and Mount Evans, as well as the alpine tundra and groves of pine and aspen. The road is windy and the scenery magnificent. It will take you to the trailhead of Mt. Bierstadt, so if you are feeling particularly spunky, you can hike one of Colorado's easiest 14ers. Start in Bailey and head west on Highway 285. Turn left about 14 miles later in Grant on County Road 62. There is some great BBQ at this intersection, or have lunch in Georgetown at the end of the pass. Bring your binoculars and keep and eye out for bighorn sheep, beavers, elk, mountain goats, moose and bald eagles. The drive is only about an hour, but there are places to stop and walk around, a campground and fishing opportunities.
The town of Florissant is about 1.5 hours from Bailey. It is gorgeous drive, and once there check out the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument to see one of the richest and most diverse fossil deposits in the world. Petrified redwood stumps up to 14 feet wide and thousands of detailed fossils of insects and plants reveal the story of a very different, prehistoric Colorado. After, head over to the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center to see wolves, coyote and fox on an hour guided tour. You can also do a Meet and Great Encounter to experience a wolf up close and personal and they take photos of you with the wolves. (Call ahead to make a reservation and check current hours and tour times/prices).
Deckers is a tiny village surrounded by thick forest and rolling hills, known for its world class fly-fishing. The beautiful South Platte River flows through the town, and it is very common to see fly fishers scattered throughout the river. Dip your feet in the water, and watch the masters at work, or bring a rod and give it a go! (you can get a day fishing license). On your way out to Deckers, stop at the historic Bucksnort Saloon and Family Restaruant. It is "one of the coolest mountain bars in the state, and easily the most iconic". Rampart Range is about an hour from Deckers, and is know for OHV trails, camping and beautiful scenery.
There are many hiking and offroad trails near our house. Some we recommend are; Meridian Trailhead, Deer Creek Trail, and Slaughterhouse Gulch for off-roading. You can also rent ATVs nearby at 285 ATVs. Deer Creek Trail: Just 20 minutes north of town, this popular trail delivers hikers through the Mt. Evans Wilderness to the boundary between the Pike and Arapaho national forests. It’s considered to be moderately difficult, and hikers should bring adequate clothing and supplies since the trail will take them to elevations of 13,000 feet. Burning Bear Trail: This is a gorgeous trail even by Colorado’s high standards. At five and a half miles of easy conditions, this hike offers views of craggy rock formations, pristine alpine lakes, towering peaks, and bucolic streams. Meridian Trailhead: Pro tip, don't follow the main trial uphill, but instead stay low and follow the creek. We have seen several moose on this trail, so keep your eyes out! Also lots of wild mushrooms and raspberries.
This adorable winery is located on the North Fork of the South Platte River in downtown Bailey. The wine is incredible (I love the pomegranate) and the food is the best in town. Sip original wines while sitting right along the river bank and enjoying the live music every weekend! It's kid friendly as well!
