The Road to Hana is a stunning 64-mile drive along Maui’s rugged coastline, known for its breathtaking scenery, lush rainforests, and cascading waterfalls. With over 600 curves and 50 bridges, this iconic route offers countless opportunities to stop and explore hidden beaches, vibrant tropical landscapes, lava caves, and charming roadside stands. If you know Caroline well, you know that she absolutely hates road trips but this is one of her favorite activities on Maui. Be sure to make a reservation at the Waiʻānapanapa State Park (black sand beach) in advance, download the Shaka app for a location-based, audio guided tour, and stop for all the banana bread and fresh fruit. Start early as this is an all day activity!
We recommend taking a boat tour to this stunning crescent-shaped island, perfect for snorkeling and spotting colorful marine life. Caroline and Brian did this together on Brian's first trip to Hawaii - be sure to bring some Dramamine as the boat can get a little rocky! Alternatively, there are lots of great snorkel spots all over the island - we always rent from Snorkel Bob's but hear Boss Frog may have some good deals as well.
You can probably guess who recommended this activity - the most popular Haleakala Crater hike is Sliding Sands Trail, or Keoneheehee Trail, which starts 500 feet below the summit. You’ll feel like you’re walking on the surface of Mars as you hike along the black sand and descend 2,500 feet down into the crater. Bring lots of water, sunscreen, and extra layers as the summit can get chilly. Caroline and Brian did this hike a few years back and Caroline got fried so remember to reapply your sunscreen! If hiking isn't your jam, you can also drive up to the summit to watch the sun rise - note you'll need to get there super early and make a reservation in advance. Haleakula is a US National Park so it does cost $25 per vehicle to enter.
February is peak season for whale watching on Maui! There are tons of boat tours you can take to go see humpback whales as they migrate for mating season. They're known for a lot of breaches and tail slaps this time of year. One land-based (and free) spot to whale watch is Papawai Point about 20 minutes south of Lahaina. There is a public parking lot 3 miles northwest of Maalaea Harbor on Route 30. Go early – this place gets crowded!
